The Culper Spy Ring was the first American intelligence organization during the American Revolutionary War. It was organized in 1778 by Major Benjamin Tallmadge per request of General George Washington and operated on Long Island and New York City. The name “Culper” was suggested by George Washington, taken from Culpeper County, Virginia. Codes and aliases were used to conceal the identities of the members.
